The End of Belief:
beyond our Axial Age traditions
"Therein lies the most decisive turning point in history.
It made the human with whom we live today."

Our current Axial Age beliefs will need serious revision this century...
whether we like it or not

In the 21st century, it's remarkable just how ancient and conservative our core belief systems are. That includes our scientific beliefs.

Whether you believe in, say, an omniscient, benevolent God ruling the universe, or seek enlightenment through meditation on emptiness and Karma, or are a secular humanist who believes ultimate reality is the movement of elementary particles governed by scientific natural law all these beliefs and many, many more derive directly from a single epoch in history, the so-called Axial Age, roughly 800 - 200 B.C.

Seriously - our thinking will have to get more creative in the future.
